Permaculture Design Course – Postponed

October 26, 2016

Hi and thanks for your interest in advanced permaculture design.  Due to a number of factors, this November 2016 course has been postponed until 2017.  If you would like to be informed of the new dates, please register for our newsletter or check back in 2017. Thank you, Catherine

What you will learn

  • A compelling approach to understanding the essential ingredients of sound design process.
  • How to use the holistic decision making framework to help your clients tell you what they really want.
  • Tuning into a site and recording the essentials needed for a sound design.
  • Including clients inside the whole process so there is no hand-over at the end.
  • How to literally work from patterns to details in an organic unfolding process.
The idea of a pattern as a tension-reducing geometry and how this understanding massively increases the functionality of your designs.
  • Implementing the design – how to manage or refer this effectively, for a great result.
  • Permaculture Business – structures and management techniques that work for everyone (yes – including What to charge, and how to charge it.)
  • Students can bring examples of their own permaculture design work for feedback and discussion.

This mentoring experience is designed for people who’ve already had basic permaculture exposure (PDCertificate).

It will unfold in a relaxed, rural, small group setting with Dan Palmer, an experienced professional designer who is also a terrific human being and extraordinary teacher.

Your teacher – Dan Palmer

img_1410Dan Palmer is founder of Making Permaculture Stronger, founder of the global Permablitz movement, director of Very Edible Gardens, and a house-bus living husband of one and father of two.

He has a BA and Masters Degree in Social Science, a PhD in Systems Thinking, and has been a full-time professional permaculture designer for over ten years.

His teachers and mentors include permaculture founders Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, as well as Darren Doherty and Rosemary Morrow, the last of whom he spent seven months teaching and implementing permaculture in Ethiopia and Uganda.

This workshop is for people who want to:

  • Feel confident about doing permaculture design.
  • Improve the depth and soundness of their designing.
  • Design at a higher or professional level.
  • Be able to easily answer the questions: “Is this a good client for me to design for?” “What are the most important things to address and in what order?” “How do I balance what the client wants, the land wants and I as the designer think is best?”
  • Become aware of and avoid common traps, pitfalls, gaps and limitations with permaculture design as it is usually communicated.
  • Enter the world of the amazing design paradigm of Christopher Alexander (as interpreted and adapted by Dan). Warning – there may be no turning back.

Here’s what past participants had to say:

gwpri“Dan is a wonderful educator: amazingly honest, supremely generous and intensely knowledgeable. The course gave me a fantastic understanding of how to be a professional designer. We covered the practicalities of each part of the design process really well. I can more clearly visualise myself as a designer now, and it was such a blurry vision before.”

“The workshop was exactly what I needed to get myself over some humps I had been stuck behind, both in my design process as well as in my life more generally. I felt afterwards that I knew how to find my next steps forward, which was a major breakthrough!”

“A fantastic and motivating workshop which considers all aspects of professional permaculture design. Dan’s teaching style is fluid, fast (when it needs to be), and inclusive. Highly recommended for budding designers.”
