Gardening Essentials Session #2: Propagation of Winter Hardwoods

June 27, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 2:30 pm

Join us online or face to face on Saturday 27 June, 9:30am.

Propagation is like magic! You can grow more plants from seeds or plant material, you can divide roots, or graft,  it all depends on the plant and the season.  In the Gardening Essentials Course, we cover the basics of plant propagation in six sessions over the year.

In June, we typically take winter cuttings from deciduous plants: fig, plum, peach, elderberry, mulberry, grape all do well from winter hardwood cuttings. (Apple, pear, quince, citrus, avocado do not.) Non-fruiting plants that do well from winter cuttings include camellia, rose, hydrangea, hibiscus.

Cost & time: The tuition is $59.95 for the handout, reading material, 90-120 minute theory presentation and the two hour skills session.

How to Join: You are welcome to attend online or if you live in the Bay of Plenty, face to face ( we have room for up to 15). Once you register and pay your tuition, you will receive an email with all the information you need to participate: what free app or software to downloaded to participate online, what to read ahead of time and have on hand, handouts, links, and passwords.

Here’s an overview of the rest of the propagation sessions: In early spring, tree propagation will be covered.  In late spring, we’ll look at seed raising, seed raising mix and germination. Summer, is the best time to collect and root “soft” cuttings (sage, salvias, scented geraniums) and some “semi-hardwood” cuttings (lavender, rosemary, Chilean guava). Once we get to Autumn, we are dividing plants like rhubarb, comfrey, mint, thyme and berry canes, with more “semi-hardwood cuttings.” We cover seed saving in early June and late June we do the winter “hardwood” cuttings: grape, plum, fig, hydrangea, blueberry, currant and the like.
