We find that learning plant propagation is best delivered over four sessions, one each season.  In Winter,  we do the “hardwood” cuttings: grape, plum, fig, hydrangea, blueberry, currant and the like.  That’s what we’ll cover on 18 June (and on the parallel course 22 June).

(In Spring,  we’ll look at seeds; Summer, is the best time to root “soft” cuttings like sage, salvias, scented geraniums. Once we get to Autumn, we are dividing of plants like rhubarb, comfrey, mint, thyme and berry canes. Tree propagation will also be covered.)

This is the first of the Gardening Essentials workshops

The Gardening Essentials course is suitable for those interested in propagation (4 days) and:
-Understanding soils, 3 days
-Managing pests, diseases, weeds, 3 days
-Companion planting, plants for bird and insect retention,  1 day
-Fruit tree pruning, summer and winter, 2 days
-Crop management, 1 day

Tutors: The primary tutor is Kazel Cass, with a degree in horticulture and teaching.

Time Commitment:  In addition to the 84 classroom hours, there will be a homework requirement with supporting videos to watch and a crop research project that will help you to develop a production plan for a crop of your choice. Depending on your enthusiasm, that could take 10-30 additional hours.

Tuition: We aim for 8 –  12 participants to support your hands-on learning experience.  Tuition will include all workbooks, plant materials, and planting mixes.  Here are our tuition options:

-Pay in full, direct banking, discounted tuition of $950 ($68 per workshop)
-Pay with credit card via Paypal: $1000
-Pay monthly: a deposit of $350 to hold your place, then $50 monthly, $1050 total
-Internship: Sorry, these are now filled for 2019. Participant pays half tuition of $525 and gives two hours of time per workshop, totalling 28 hours over the year.

Two Parallel Courses: Due to everyone’s busy schedules, we’ll be running identical Saturday and Tuesday courses. (Tuesday hours, 9:30-2:30, intended to be parent-friendly)   Please sign up for one or the other, but you can attend the alternate course if you miss a day.  You can also attend a missed class day when it comes around the next year, as these courses rotate through both the seasons and years.
